The Innovation Center at Mound Fort Junior High Enables Project-Based Learning

Ogden School District provides innovative and top of the line education to students in the District with a State of the art Innovation Center at Mound Fort Junior High School. The center was initially conceived through collaboration with parents and teachers to help students have a space to innovate and explore STEM subjects and career pathways. Instructors wanted to help students have the best learning experiences in the best learning environment. The plans for the center came to life with the creation of the building to help cultivate hands-on and project-based learning.

The center consists of multiple areas for students to explore exciting topics, including a research and development lab, tech ed lab, and maker space. These unique areas are used for various activities that help students learn in new and exciting ways that many other schools are not able to provide as effectively. The Innovation Center is designed to help students participate in project-based activities where they can collaborate and communicate freely. Students can participate in pursuing further education in multiple fields, including engineering, design and modeling, video production, and robotics.

Rob Settler, a STEM teacher at Mound Fort Junior High School, loves  having a space where students can get more involved with learning of any kind. He stated, “Even though it’s a STEM-based building, there is so much more going on with it and that can happen… The kids, when they come down and see what we have here, their imaginations are already sparking. They want to start their own businesses…and create things for the school already.”

The center offers great opportunities for students and teachers alike, and apart from being a great environment for learning and sharing new ideas, the building is also recognized for its excellence. The center was awarded the “K-12 small project of the year” for 2019 by Utah Construction & Design. Ogden School District looks forward to continuing to elevate the STEM education offered in the District with programs and buildings like The Innovation Center.
