Filipino artist’s work reaches the finals in prestigious international art competition on environment and sustainability

The Beyond Future Art Prize 2023, Asia’s most prestigious international art competition dedicated to sustainable living, has just been completed, and the series of fine art prints by Filipino artist and photographer Rodolfo Canete was one of the 22 finalists chosen from more than a thousand of entries.

Artists from Germany, Latvia, China, Italy, Brazil, Japan, the United States, France, Russia, Poland, Austria, Nigeria, Canada, Bulgaria, and the United Kingdom are among the other 21 finalists.

The organizers have this to say about Mr. Canete’s entry on their social media announcement page:

“We are thrilled to feature the innovative and thought-provoking works of Rodolfo Canete, our finalist from the Philippines. His digital art explores the intersection of art, environment, and technology, showcasing the delicate ecological balance of our planet.

“Rodolfo’s work, focusing on the art of stone balancing, serves as a poetic visual metaphor and a philosophical reflection on our relationship with nature. His pieces contrast delicate arrangements of stone with weathered relics, creating a dialogue between humanity’s ambition and nature’s enduring power.”

According to Canete, “My art envisions that path. The art of stone balancing: an aesthetic reflection on our relationship with nature… Achieving harmony with natural forces grants a more enduring power.”

In his artist statement, Canete adds that his “art explores technology’s capacity to augment human senses and abilities. Virtual and augmented reality dissolve the barriers between the natural and digital, hinting at a future where technology does not constrain our world but expands it. I blend real and simulated environments to stretch the imagination, casting technology not only as a source of ecological crisis but also as a wellspring of solutions.”

Canete’s work spans installations, photographs, videos, and fine art prints displayed in respected venues like the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and Visual Art Centre. His art reaches commercial and university galleries too.

Canete published “The Geometry of Angels,” a book of visual essays that explores the concept of heteronyms through the eyes of a visual artist, in 2021. His most recent published work is “A Tapestry of Earthly Impressions” (2023), a collection of conservation-themed artworks.
