The Nancy Etz Scholarship Announces The 2021 Winner

February 20, 2021 – Nancy Etz is delighted to present the 2021 scholarship award to a deserving winner. The $1,000 scholarship was founded to support current U.S. college students or high school seniors who are accepted into any collegiate program. After an overwhelming response of applicants and much deliberation, the award belongs to student Raniya Holmes.

Raniya Holmes is a Junior student at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. As an upcoming senior finishing a degree in Urban Social Work, Holmes explained that the financial support will help her pursue her advocacies.

A part of the scholarship application is an essay question that asks to explain “a special attribute or accomplishment that sets you apart”.

Raniya answered, “A special attribute of mine that sets me apart is my dedication to helping urban communities through advocacy, art, social work, and holistic midwifery.” She also explained that her advocacies can help bring awareness to spark change: “More awareness and change must be brought to my city to help stop the violence, homelessness, drug abuse and other negative things that affects those that may be less fortunate.”

The Nancy Etz scholarship was created to support students who desire to bring change to their respective communities. The foundation understands the importance of getting a degree in order to advance in one’s desired path to make a change in the world. However, some students may not have the opportunity due to financial limitations imposed by completing a degree. The goal of the scholarship is to lighten the financial burden of current and incoming students on their way to pursuing their purposeful dreams.

The winner of the scholarship embodies the desire to change their community in the roles they will be pursuing after graduation. Holmes explained how valuable her role will be for her community after she finishes her urban social work degree, “The school of social work has helped me to find my footing in the role I would like to play as an urban social worker. Not only would I like to become a therapist, I would also like to incorporate art therapy into my traditional talk therapy as well.”

Raniya also explained the power of diversity in her role, “As a black woman, within our medical field I have witnessed black women gain the short end of the stick when it comes to care and treatment and doctors taking our word for what our body is going through, especially when it comes to childbirth. My passion with women’s rights and health has become a growing one in the coming years and has manifested itself within maternity health. Once I graduate college I plan to become a doula, helping to serve and assist women with a knowledgeable and safe childbirth.” She continued, “My passions are special attributes to me as they have shaped me as a person and will help me to make a difference in my community and beyond. My special attributes also bring change, awareness and educate those around me.”

This year’s scholarship award will apply to Ms. Holmes in the fall semester of 2021. To know more about the annual program, kindly visit the official scholarship website.
