CanadaSound creates game around Canadians’ favorite sounds of summer to inspire happiness during pandemic

After months of COVID-19 lockdown and isolation, cleansheet, inspired by their CanadaSound program and its curation of 1,000 quintessentially Canadian sounds, announces ‘The Great CanadaSound Contest’. A contest using Canadians’ favourite sounds of summer to inspire memories, make people smile with the hope for better days ahead… and above all challenge Canadians to find out how well they know the sounds of our country.

Inspired by the powerful memories triggered by sound, the CanadaSoundbank was created by Canadians themselves. With submissions from ages 4 to 84 years, across all languages and from coast to coast to coast, the CanadaSoundbank is one of the most authentic snapshots of the sounds that define us.

“This COVID crisis has weighed on us all,” says Neil McOstrich, Co-founder of cleansheet communications which created the project. “The sounds of a tent zipper opening or the bell on a child’s bike or the wind rustling through the pine trees are hopeful, happy sounds. And our hope is that by making them public, we can bring a little joy to Canadians at this difficult time.”

Starting June 23rd and ending on July 1st Canada’s birthday, cleansheet will post a daily poll on Instagram asking Canadians to identify a uniquely Canadian sound of summer. Every day a person plays the game, their name is placed in a draw for a chance to win a gift card for a year’s worth of music streaming service of their choice. The winner will be announced on July 6th, 2020.

The CanadaSoundbank was created by cleansheet as part of the CanadaSound Project in 2017 to encourage Canadians to express their love for Canada through their favourite sounds. Those sounds formed Canada’s first nationally co-created Soundscape collection at canadasound.ca, which was curated and made available to artists on a rights-free digital platform where they could sample, mix, or simply be inspired by the sentiment behind them.
