Paving the Way for Diversity with Data Science Scholarships

Paving the Way for Diversity with Data Science Scholarships
QuantHub, the leading data science assessment and upskilling platform has awarded two scholarships to recipients that have exemplified leadership towards gender inequality and ethnic diversity in data science.

Birmingham, AL – Reuben Fresquez, a computer science student at the University of New Mexico is the winner of QuantHub’s Diversity in Data Science Scholarship. Shannon Kelley, who is enrolled in the Master’s of Data Science program at DePaul University is the winner of QuantHub’s Women in Data Science Scholarship. Reuben and Shannon have both contributed their expertise to some of the world’s recent newsworthy events including Covid-19 and the Mars 2020 SuperCam flight software.

With growing interest and media diverted to the data science field, a lack of diversity and gender equality has remained one of the most discussed topics. Reuben and Shannon shared their opinions on this topic as well as how they’ve already taken action towards making a difference.

Reuben shared his experience teaching an introduction to computer science workshop to high school students in a low-income area of New Mexico. “Our hope was to help fellow minority students see computer science as something feasible for them to pursue, and we hoped a simple workshop would be impactful enough to convince the students to consider computer science for a future career or at the very least spark interest.” He believes there’s a lack of minority representation in technology fields and believes, “A major cause of students feeling like they ‘don’t belong’ in tech or data science fields is the lack of access to technology in combination with a lack of representation in tech related fields.”

We asked Shannon for her thoughts on the gender gap in tech. “Women are fed a strange fairy tale that someone else will come along and solve your problems. This then implies that girls are incapable of finding solutions on their own. When someone is taught that throughout their life, they start to believe it.” Her career in data science is fueled by her belief that, “Not only does data science involve problem solving, but it also often involves problem finding. I believe the ability to do both is equally as important. The absolute most important reason I want to have a career in data science is because I want to make a difference.”

There is much to learn from this ambitious, altruistic generation of students, and Reuben and Shannon exemplify that to the highest degree.  continues to invest in the next generation of data leaders through an annual scholarship and free data challenges.

In order to achieve the disruptive potential of AI,  helps companies hire the right people with the right skills. QuantHub’s assessment and upskilling platform provides transparency into the spectrum of data and analytics skills of job candidates and employees.
